Worst Partner Sell-Out

Alvah Curtis Roebuck born in 1864 was originally a watchmaker that Richard Warren Sears born in 1863 hired. They were opposites, Sears a promoter, Roebuck a conservative, careful man. They got along well and became partners. After a while Roebuck sold out for $25,000 because he didn’t agree with the frantic expansion of the company. He invented a typewriter and invested the proceeds of the typewriter income in Florida real estate. He lost everything in the crash of 1929. He showed up at the Sears employment office looking for any work at all. He was hired as a “celebrity” to cut ribbons at grand openings, etc.

At the age of 44 Mr. Sears retired with over $17 million.

Mr. Sears lived to an age of 51. He died after for suffering for several years with kidney disease.

Mr. Roebuck lasted 84 years. Who got the last laugh?

Worst Omission From an Important Document

In Thomas Jefferson’s first draft of the Declaration of Independence, he included a proposal to put an end to slavery.

Ben Franklin was on board with that, even though he owned two slaves at the time and held as many as seven previously. Ben also allowed the printing of rewards for the capture of slaves in his printing shop, and let slaves be sold in his general store, although he later became a staunch abolitionist.

Other politicians forced Thomas Jefferson to delete the anti-slavery portion in the final draft. They were so concerned with what they considered the most important first step, the freeing of America, and didn’t want to dilute their statement with a message about slavery.

This caused slavery to last approximately 90 years longer than might have been possible.

Worst Submarine

The world’s worst submarine was the first submarine. That makes sense. It had very limited capabilities. In it’s one and only attempted attack it was comically ineffective.

In the mid 1770’s David Bushnell, an inventive guy, created the world’s first attack submarine. Using whiskey barrel technology, he made a watertight clam shell shaped vehicle with barely enough room for one man. The thing, nicknamed the Turtle, was placed in New York Harbor one night Continue reading Worst Submarine

Worst Teetotaler

After marrying a promising young physician in 1867, Carrie Nation (also known as Carry Nation) was horrified to see her husband destroy his career and his life after only two years. He drank himself to death. Mrs. Nation was so angry and disgusted with alcohol that she smashed up over 30 drinking establishments. This fearsome looking nearly six-foot-tall, 175 pound woman would enter a bar with such frenzy that all the male patrons ran in fright. She busted all the bottles and much of the furniture with rocks, bricks and a hatchet.

Worst Thing to Give to Children

If you filled trucks with all the candy American kids eat in one year, they would line up bumper to bumper from San Diego to San Francisco.

Sugar is highly addictive. Some have said it’s more addictive than cocaine. Speaking of cocaine, some have said that overcoming an addition to sugar is even more difficult than an addition to cocaine.

Sugar is strongly implicated in numerous scientific studies covering a wide range of diseases from high blood pressure to cancer and especially diabetes.

The number of children and young adults afflicted with diabetes and blood pressure has skyrocketed since the increase of sugar in the standard American diet.

Starchy foods aren’t much better. If you eat bread, pies, cake or anything of that sort, your digestive process converts it to sugar.

Soft drinks have an amazing 10 or more teaspoons of sugar dissolved in every can.

What about fruit juice? Nope, not good either. Although natural juices don’t contain sucrose – table sugar – fruit sugars without their roughage are nearly as deadly.

Yeah, deadly. The problem is most people don’t recognize sugar as deadly because it isn’t a quick acting poison. People don’t eat a fudge brownie and fall over dead. It’s insidious because the death cames slowly yet painfully, usually, but not always after 40 or more years.

How about sugar substitutes? Things like corn syrup or honey have the same effect as other types of sugar.

However, there are two products that can satisfy in the same way as sugar, yet they are not sugars and contain no calories. Those are stevia and monk fruit.

You’ll find stevia often served in little packets in restaurants and cafes where the management is trying to think of their patrons’ health. If you read the small print on the packets of stevia, you may be shocked to discover the actual amount of stevia is slight. The packet mostly contains fillers such as Erythritol. Some manufacturers even mix their stevia with dextrose or sucrose – sugar.

Why would they do that? Because stevia is 200 to 300 times sweeter than table sugar. Although rare, you can buy pure stevia on Amazon and elsewhere. You would be amazed at how little is needed to sweeten a food or beverage.

The taste of stevia or monk fruit is so close to sugar that if you use it as a sugar substitute, children will not detect the difference, but they are likely to live longer and healthier.

As one who has overcome a sugar addiction, it wasn’t as hard as they say, I have noticed that I have more consistent energy. I used to get suddenly tired, sometimes even dizzy after short bursts of exertion. For instance, I might have to sit out every other game of pickleball. Now, I can play for hours at a time with no sugar bonk.
